As of December 2021, all eight (parent) communities have successfully completed certification and are offering the EPR to the entire population in their cantons. Wide accessibility and simplified opening procedures are foreseen for the whole population in the near future.

The EPD enables digital patient management by integrating medical indications and treatment data on regional, national and international level. Patients have control over their health management and control over their medical and therapeutic treatments. The EPR is the key to advanced digital healthcare in Switzerland.

Hospitals, clinics, birthing centers and nursing homes are required by law to join a (parent) community and use the EPR in everyday clinical practice. Physicians and facilities that provide outpatient nursing care by physicians must prove to the cantonal authorities that they are affiliated with an EPR (home) community when they apply for authorization to operate at the expense of the compulsory health care insurance (OKP).
